Notes: In an
effort to extend the range of what
was then the new generation of jets,
this B-29 was turned into a KB-29 by
attaching an AR boom, to conduct
experiments in air-to-air refueling.
Seen here is an F-86A conducting AR,
which had to lower its landing gear
to slow down enough for the KB-29.

XB-35 #42-13603 - Northrop & P-61
Chase |
Location: N/A |
Date: 6/25/1946 |

Notes: Jack
Northrop's first 'Flying Wing' (the
XB-35) is seen here while making its
first flight from the Northrop Co.
airfield, to Muroc AAF (later
Edwards AFB). The P-61 providing
chase during the flight caught fire
soon after this photo was taken,
forcing its crew to parachute to
safety.

YF-84F Serial #49-2430 & B-36
'Mother Ship' |
Location: N/A |
Date: N/A |
Credit: USAF |
Notes: During the
late 1940s, the concept of using a
“parasite fighter” on B-36s was
tested. An early prototype
YF-84F was fitted with a retractable
nose hook for recoveries. The FICON
(Fighter Conveyor) concept worked,
but was found to be a problem when
the bomber tried to take off with
the fighter attached.
